Get Outdoors, No Matter the Season

One of the most significant benefits of living in Alaska is the incredible access to nature. Our poodles love to hike through the forest, run across frozen lakes, and splash in muddy rivers. As long as it’s safe, we get outside.

I enjoy hiking when there is light in the winter. This means I’m looking for a tiny window of opportunity! We usually hike from late morning to early afternoon. Winter hikes aren’t as long as summer hikes. Winter hikes tend to be more intense, so the shorter intervals still work in our favor for good physical exercise.
In the summer, we hit the trails early to midday. I’m always working on the balance between heat and bugs. In Alaska, a nice, full sun hike means fewer bugs. This typically means I hit the trails in the early afternoon. However, the cool mornings are great for a longer hike when the heat can become too intense due to the strenuous nature of the hike. Alaska might be rugged, but our poodles are tough, and they love it.

Mental Stimulation Counts as Activity

During long stretches of rain, bitter cold snaps, or when the roads are just too icy, we shift our focus indoors. Activity doesn’t always mean physical exertion.

Poodles are incredibly intelligent, and they require mental stimulation to stay balanced. We work on advanced obedience training, problem-solving games, and scent work. Teaching a new trick or reinforcing an old one is a great way to channel their energy and strengthen our bond.

Enrichment Keeps the Cabin from Feeling Too Small

Living in a log cabin with a pack of poodles has taught me the value of creative enrichment. We rotate toys often, use puzzle feeders, and set up simple obstacle courses in the house.

Even something as small as hiding treats in boxes or under laundry baskets can provide a fun challenge. We also play controlled indoor games, such as tug or hallway fetch, to burn off energy without damaging the furniture.

Stick to a Routine

Poodles do best when they know what to expect. Our dogs have a daily rhythm that includes time for structured training, free play, rest, and meals. Even in the darkest winter months, we maintain that schedule.

It keeps them calm and focused, making them easier to live with. When your dogs know they’ll have a chance to run or play every day, they’re more settled indoors.

Lumi, a stunning white standard poodle from my 2022 litter, has grown into everything I hoped for and more. She’s clever, calm, athletic, and endlessly sweet — and thanks to the love and dedication of her family, she’s thriving in every sense of the word.

I placed Lumi with Cori Kindred and her family in Anchorage, Alaska, after carefully considering what kind of home would best suit her temperament.

From the beginning, I knew she needed an active family who would nurture her intelligence and steady confidence. Cori’s family was the perfect fit: they love outdoor adventures, take frequent camping trips, and are passionate about dog performance sports. More than that, they’re deeply committed to partnership and training, and Lumi has repaid that commitment tenfold.

She settled in with ease, forming strong bonds with both her human and animal companions. Even the family cat, Midge, took a quick liking to her, and toddler Torsten quickly gained a gentle and playful best friend. From day one, Lumi behaved like a wise adult in a puppy's body — patient, observant, and adaptable.

Now nearly three years old, Lumi is making her mark in the performance ring.

In just one weekend, she completed her Rally Novice title, scoring two 91s and a 94, earning 4th, 3rd, and 2nd place finishes. She followed that up with another 91-point leg toward her Rally Advanced title, placing 3rd once again. What’s even more remarkable is that she did this with zero preparation leading up to the trials. Lumi’s natural focus, drive, and solid temperament carried her through with grace.

And she’s not stopping at Rally Obedience. Lumi has recently started practicing barn hunt, a sport where dogs use their noses to locate safely contained rats hidden in hay. Even as a beginner, Lumi approached the challenge with enthusiasm and confidence. Watching her problem-solve, work through distractions, and communicate with her handler has been a joy.

Beyond the ring, Lumi is unshakable. At public events filled with noise, motion, and strangers — including Beat Paw Friday with balloons popping, loud rides, and large crowds — she remained calm, curious, and composed. Whether in a crowded festival, a bustling boat shop with loud machinery, or high atop a ladder (yes, she climbed one!), Lumi consistently shows the kind of resilience and poise that makes her a dream companion.

But perhaps Lumi’s greatest joy is simply being with her people.

She adores children, soaks up training time, and is always ready for the next family adventure. She’s the kind of dog that makes you smile every time you see her — a wonderful blend of heart, brain, and bravery.

Cori once said, “She’s the happiest, sweetest, cleverest, most lovely girl — and I’m head over heels.”

I couldn’t agree more.

There are dogs that simply do their job, and then there are dogs like Chulyen — whose very presence transforms lives.

Chulyen is a Galavanting Poodle who is a working service poodle. He has been on an extraordinary journey with his person, Evie. From the moment he went home with her, it was clear this pairing had something special. His calm, observant temperament made him stand out early in his litter. I knew he had the potential to provide the specific task-oriented service work that Evie needed in a service animal. But what he has become in the last two years has exceeded even my highest hopes.

Before Chulyen, Evie had a long history with intense working breeds such as German Shepherds and Border Collies. Dogs with sharp minds and strong wills. They were brilliant but often reactive, and their behavior required constant, careful management. Visits from friends or other animals meant juggling dogs from room to room. Going out in public meant being tightly leashed and hypervigilant. These dogs were deeply loved, but they made life heavy.

So when Chulyen came along — calm, social, steady — Evie was unnerved. She worried something was wrong with him. Could he really be that easy? Was he sick? “Normal” didn’t feel normal at all. Friends, veterinarians, coworkers, and even I all reassured her: this was just who Chulyen was. A poodle bred for soundness in mind and body. A dog who is ready to make life lighter.

Today, Chulyen is nearing the completion of his service dog training.

He accompanies Evie to her workplace and knows when it’s time to switch into work mode. When the harness goes on, he settles into focus. When it comes off, he gets to enjoy playtime, walks, and the joy of being a dog. This balance between service and spirit is vital for long-term success, and Evie handles it beautifully.

Chulyen has already been through situations that test even experienced service dogs. At a one training trip to the bustling Dimond Center, Evie and Chulyen encountered a whirlwind of chaos: people pushing past, touching him without asking, a child falling on him, and — perhaps most frustratingly — an untrained dog in a service vest who lunged and snapped at him. Through it all, Chulyen remained composed. No barking. No lunging. Just quiet patience and an occasional look to Evie for support and reassurance. He did need hugs along the way, but who wouldn’t?

He’s also a frequent flyer, with multiple flights under his belt. TSA at the Ted Stevens International Airport knows to look for Chulyen when they see Evie arrive for a flight! Chulyen navigates airports and airplanes with the calm focus of a seasoned pro. Once, during a security check, a TSA agent who was afraid of dogs hesitated to pat him down. But after seeing how gentle and still he stood beside Evie, she followed through — and afterward, thanked him for helping her overcome her fear. That’s the kind of dog he is: a quiet ambassador for his breed and his work.

Chulyen doesn’t just work — he connects. When Evie met a 15-year-old blind standard poodle named Chloe during a Costco trip, Chulyen was gracious and still as she approached and sniffed him. At home, he brings her items she’s dropped, even jumping off the bed to retrieve clothes she misfires into the laundry zone. He keeps vigil by her wheelchair at night, choosing to sleep beside it instead of the bed.

And, of course, he’s had adventures — from walking along the Trinity River and exploring the Redwoods to watching boats pass by in San Diego and calmly observing a K-9 unit on an old Navy ship. He met his cousins, played on the beaches, and kept his cool despite travel delays, buses, and hotel life. He even picked out a toy for himself, ignoring flashy bones and bright treats in favor of a simple, soft stuffy toy he now cherishes.

For Evie, these moments bring a level of peace she never thought she would experience with a dog.

She often reflects on the contrast — the difference between needing to control every situation and simply trusting her dog. She can now host guests without tension, welcome other dogs, and move through the world knowing Chulyen has her back — literally and emotionally.

One friend told her, “Evie, this is your reward for all the time and energy you put into animals that no one else would have put up with. You deserved a break.” Chulyen is that break. That gift. That once-in-a-lifetime companion. And I couldn’t be prouder to have him representing Galavanting Poodles.

To Chulyen and Evie — thank you. Thank you for reminding me why I breed. Thank you for showing what’s possible when the right dog meets the right person. And thank you for letting me be part of this journey.

One of my favorite things about raising poodles at Galavanting Poodles is simply watching them interact. Whether it’s a group of puppies tumbling over each other in play, an older dog patiently teaching boundaries, or a bold little pup determined to chase a leaf blowing in the wind, I’m always fascinated by their unique ways of experiencing the world. Even within the same litter, no two puppies are exactly alike. Some are adventurous and bold, others more thoughtful and reserved. Some have an unstoppable drive to work and learn, while others are happiest curled up in a lap.

These differences in temperament, drive, and personality aren’t just fun to observe—they’re the foundation of how I match each puppy with their perfect home. In this post, I’ll share what sets these traits apart, why they matter, and how understanding them helps ensure every poodle finds a family where they will thrive.

Temperament refers to the innate and relatively stable behavioral and emotional traits a dog is born with.

It's primarily influenced by genetics. For example, as a breed, poodles tend to be highly intelligent. A poodle with a good temperament is generally quite clever and will politely greet new people but may take a moment to warm up to strangers. This is due to a poodle’s intelligence and ability to observe a human before interacting more intimately. A poodle with a less desirable temperament might be overly fearful, quite snappy, and hide behind you when they meet strangers.

Drive: This is the motivation behind a dog's actions. It's what pushes them to do certain things.

Poodles, despite their waterfowl hunting origins, can have varied prey drives. Some might be more driven to chase small things such as squirrels, chickens, or other fowl. Others might be more driven to play and swim in water and retrieve bumpers or waterfowl. A poodle with a strong hunting drive may alert to small animals in your yard or on hikes. He may also notice birds and follow them with his eyes... Understanding your poodle’s drives can help you tailor training and enrichment activities to their needs.

Personality is the unique combination of temperament, drive, and learned behaviors that makes each dog an individual.

It’s the sum of all their experiences and interactions with the world. While two poodles might share a similar temperament (friendly, alert, clownish) and some drives (moderate play drive, innate curiosity), their personalities will differ. One might be playful and goofy, while another might be more relaxed and calm. Personality develops over time and is influenced by environment, training, and socialization.

Understanding these distinctions is key to helping me match you with the perfect poodle for your lifestyle. That’s why all our conversations are so meaningful—they help me understand how to pair you with a poodle with the right combination of personality, temperament, and drive to be a match!

And it’s crucial for responsible dog ownership. It allows you to appreciate your poodle’s quirks, anticipate their needs, and provide them with the best care and training.

Before my eyes open, I can feel his breath on my face. His nose pressed as close as he dared without touching my face. He senses I’m awake. My eyes are still closed, but he knows the rhythm of my breathing as though it were his own. I smile. Slowly, I open my eyes, squinting from the bright sun pouring in through my window. It’s barely 7 am, but the Alaska sun is high in the sky.

The land of the Midnight Sun indeed.

As I lay on my side facing the edge of my kind bed, my vision is obscured by the face of my very best friend.

My standard poodle, Sojourner.

I suppose it’s not entirely fair to refer to him by just his call name. Sojourner, after all, is formally known as; Group Winning GCH CH Galavanting The Road Less Traveled. Winning his first group from the bred-by class, and earning his ACK CH in two weekends. What’s more, Sojourner is the sire to the 6-9 month first place puppy bitch from PCA 2023. In short, Sojourner is a promising stud and a consummate show poodle with the attitude and the hair to show for it.

However, none of these titles and accolades mean anything this morning. Today, with his nose centimeters from mine, his tail high and swishing back and forth, his front feet tap dancing on my wood floor, the only thing that matters to Sojourner is that today, he and I have a mountain to conquer!

Before we head to the trailhead, I do a cursory check of the bands in Sojourner’s hair.

Hiking with a show poodle in big hair is not impossible. But it definitely takes some pre-planning. My preference is to band the hair for hiking rather than wrapping the hair. There are no rules for poodle hair and hiking, of course. One of the many joys of this hobby is finding what works best for myself and my poodle. Sojourner’s hair holds well in a series of bands down his neck and back, and down his ears.

We have a weekly tradition, Sojourner and I., our week always ends with his bath and groom. I learned many years ago that doing a hike the day before bath day makes a lot of sense. Today, for example, I know that there is a lake at the top of our mountain. And no part of me worries about Sojourner playing in the cold mountain water. His bath and groom are already on my schedule.

Sojourner is no stranger to hikes.

We’ve been hitting the trails together since Sojourner was only a few months old. He is very familiar with our weekly routine on the trails. Today, Sojourner is well prepared for our three miles up and into the mountain.

He began his training as all poodles should; as a baby puppy. Watching Sojourner now, bounding along the trail as we begin our hike, I am reminded of that baby puppy from a couple of years ago. He would rest in my Osprey Day Hiking Pack at the beginning of our puppy hikes. 30 minutes in the pack as I trekked along and 20 minutes of free play out of the pack. We would explore the dirt, the rocks, the trees, and the forest floor. There are always so many new things for a puppy to conquer on a hiking trail!

Sojourner continued to use my pack until his body was developed enough to travel short distances on his own. His whole first year, our hiking adventures were more about the journey and less about the destination.

Each of those puppy hikes was an opportunity for him to learn. Sojourner learned how to greet fellow hikers, he learned the smells and sounds of the forests and mountains in our area. He learned what other animals live in the backcountry of Alaska and how he would be expected to behave around the wild animals that call these woods their home.

Sojourner and I round the first bend to begin our climb to the summit.

The air is crisp and the sun is warming our bodies even though it is barely 9 am. At well over two years old, he is plenty developed and physically mature for this hike. Sojourner’s first summit was at 18 months old. He was extremely pleased with himself that day and his love of hiking has only increased over the last year of weekly summits.

As we begin our direct ascent, I see Sojourner stop and sniff the air. I pause and take a look around us. It is quiet, save for a few birds calling back and forth to each other. The air is very still. With so much training under his belt from past hikes, I know Sojourner is very familiar with this scent he’s caught. I look around, about three meters off the trail to my right, and I see her. A cow moose enjoying a mid-morning snack of fresh trees and leaves. She sees us too. She side-eyes Sojourner and licks her lips. A very clear, nonverbal signal that she would prefer the big black poodle to move along and stop his staring.

Fair enough. These woods belong to her, after all.

“Sojo! Aquì!” I say these words loud enough for the moose and Sojourner to hear.

This phrase is Sojourner’s urgent recall. A solid recall and a hard stay are two commands I require of every poodle I take to hike. A missed cue in the backcountry can be the impetus for a serious injury or worse. There are few second chances on a trail. I like to train in obedience classes, public parks, and at home before ever trusting Sojourner, or any poodle, in the backcountry.

In this instance, with our cow moose, Sojourner immediately comes to his position by my side. Keeping himself between the pose and my body. We continued our hike at a brisk and deliberate pace as the moose continued to eat. She has read our nonverbal cues clearly; we will keep moving and give her space. But the big black poodle will not leave an opening to allow a threat to his human.

We continue to climb. The ascent is long. This trail is full of switchbacks, ultimately making the climb longer but also allowing for a more natural meander for the poodle. I begin to tire more quickly than Sojourner. As my pace slows, I allow Sojourner some freedom to play and race ahead of me.

“Go play!” I tell him. That’s a favorite cue for Sojourner. It means free time and exploration as we hike. A two-meter stretch is about all I like to see in the distance between us when we hike.

Sojourner is good about checking in with me during our climb.

I acknowledge every check-in with a pet, a word of praise, or a piece of beef jerky from my fanny pack. Even as well-trained as Sojourner is on the trail, I never take for granted the power of a positive incentive for checking in. I want to always remain the most important thing on the trail to Sojourner.

After three miles, we reach the top of our mountain. I stop to breathe in the crisp mountain air. We’ve moved from the trees up into the openness of the mountaintop. The ground is covered in lichen and moss. Blueberry shrubs flood the landscapes. I’m mindful of the bears who enjoy the mountain summit with us. This time of year, bears in Alaska are fat and happy. There are plenty of fish in the waters and berries on the shrubs. The bears aren’t too concerned about hoarding resources on a mountain rich with food.

Even so, Sojourner follows my lead as we stretch our bodies and I settle on to the soft moss at the edge of our mountain lake.

“It’s okay,,” I tell Sojourner as he eyes me cautiously and sniffs the air.

“I think we’re good!”

I can tell by his relaxed body language, tail high and wagging that Sojourner agrees.

Three miles up, not another soul in sight besides his human. Blueberries are ripe for the taking and a cold, clear mountain lake for drinking play.

Yes indeed, Sojourner agrees.

We are good.

Seren sits in her ex-pen, she’s staring at me while delivering her signature high-pitched bark. She is insisting I release her from her confinement.

“You get this prima-Donna attitude from your grandmother,” I tell her as I toss some treats into her pen to distract her. I know it will only work for a moment.

While Seren snuffles around her pen for the treats I tossed, Sojourner excitedly prances over to find out what Seren is snacking on . He stands with his four feet square, neck perfectly arched as he observes the puppy and her treats.

Although his size comes down from his paternal grandmother, Sojourner’s structure and his way of presenting himself is all from his mother. His expression is a dead ringer for his mom, while it rests in a head that favors his father.

Every day I can see pieces of my poodles’ lineages in their bodies and temperaments. I can see the attitude of a grandfather, the feet of an aunt, the shoulder of a great-grandmother or the head of a half sibling who may live on the other side of the world.

It is important business, knowing a family line in poodles.

I am of the firm opinion that knowing a pedigree is the most basic level of breeding in an accountable breeding program. The pedigree offers a huge window into the history of a specific poodle. When I study a pedigree, I learn everything available about the poodles that have gone before my breedings.

For example; there are no health tests that can predict Addison’s disease. But learning about the poodles in a pedigree can tell me if Addison’s has cropped up in a family of poodles. I can also learn where in the pedigree it arrived and how common Addison’s has been in other poodles of the same line.

Another common health issue I study is bloat. The poodle is a breed that is built with a deep chest. This type of structure naturally increases the risk of bloat in the standard poodle variety of the poodle breed. This same risk is also common in other deep chested dog breeds such as Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers, the Weimaraner and others. 

The most updated science we have tells us that bloat is likely a genetic or environmental issue. Again, there is no genetic test that can predict a poodle’s risk of bloat… so once again, I find myself studying pedigrees to learn when and where bloat has appeared in a line. 

I will admit; studying pedigrees is not for the faint of heart.

When I first began my studies, I started by looking for tell-tale commonalities that would separate one poodle line from another, I would find a popular stud, meaning a male poodle that was used by several different breeders for multiple females. I would go through and find all the photos and videos I could of this male. Next I would find out as much information as I could about the poodle puppies this particular male sired. I would follow lines back as far as I could and look for consistencies in the build, coat type, temperament and health. 

This type of research takes weeks, months and years of dedication. It also takes an ability to reach out to people, begin conversations, and most importantly, to listen to the information given through stories, life experiences and first hand impressions. I have been fortunate enough to share many dinners, phone conversations and ring-side chats with poodle breeders from all over the world. In my experience, it has always paid to be the first to listen and the last to speak.

This is the point in my writing where I try to impress upon you, my dear reader, the one thing you cannot train or create in a truly accountable breeder. And that is the passion.

Studying pedigrees can be quite a daunting task. It can also be a bit boring. Even frustrating on those late nights where, no matter how hard I search, a good photograph of a particular head evades my grasp. I often tease that I have earned my Master’s Degree in Google Search. Thanks in no small part to the research of poodle pedigrees and kennels! I can’t imagine a way to teach the sort of interest necessary for a pedigree search unless there is a passion at the root of the interest.

On a personal note; I’ve spent several years studying about 5 specific lines of pedigrees that contain bits and pieces I’d like to see in my own Galavanting Poodles line. And like with anything in life, I have learned that I must take the good with the bad. When I find a line that has a temperament conducive with my own goals, my job of studying the pedigree has only just begun! 

I have to also look at the autoimmune health of the poodles in the pedigree. What issues have been recorded? How common are these issues? Have they increased through the pedigree or decreased?

What is the structure of the poodles in this line? Are they built well? Which poodle carries a specific structural trait that is obviously carried on through the lineage? And what is sacrificed in a pedigree in order to keep that specific trait?

I also seek out information about the poodle coat in pedigrees. Poodle hair is supposed to have a thickness and coarseness to it. This texture is what keeps the poodle hair standing off its body and drawing away water from the skin. A proper poodle coat is water resistant and is not prone to matting like a thin or fine textured poodle coat. All of this information about a poodle coat can be found right in the poodle pedigree! 

A well researched pedigree is a great asset to any breeding program. And not having the best educated guess as to what sort of puppies a breeding will produce feels, to me, irresponsible in the least and downright reckless at the most. 

When you’re interested in a Galavanting Poodles puppy, ask me about the pedigree of a current or future breeding I have planned. I enjoy walking my puppy families through my own thought process as I breed. I want each generation of poodle puppies I produce to be an asset to the poodle breed in general. I am always excited to share my knowledge, experience and my theories with all of puppy families!

I was 8 years old when I held my first pair of knitting needles. I remember my mother sitting me in front of her and instructing me on how to make little knots with two metal needles that felt too long and awkward in my young hands. The joy of knitting grabbed hold of my attention almost immediately. Soon I was off to the (knitting) races with my needles, my yarn, and my dreams of pot holders, washing clothes, and scarves. Once I decided to try more complicated knitting patterns; such as socks, mittens, and eventually sweaters, I discovered a knitting conviction that has followed me my entire life:

Never substitute wool.

Regarding my knitting projects, the one element I won’t substitute is wool fiber. The advantages of wool fiber are worth it to me. If a project I’m knitting calls for wool as my fiber, you can bet I’m knitting with wool. Wool is a fiber that provides both warmth and cooling abilities. Wool is water resistant. I love the texture of wool fibers and the stitch definition.

However, the NO-SUBSTITUTION guideline I follow goes beyond the wool in my knitting basket. In the world of my poodles, there is something else that I never substitute - the decompression walk. 

As a poodle owner, it's essential for me to provide not only physical exercise but also mental stimulation for my dogs. I’ve found that the best, most consistent, and most productive way to provide this stimulation on a regular basis is through the decompression walk.

Sarah Stremming, a dog trainer I highly recommend, describes the decompression walk as "a walk where the dog is allowed freedom of movement in nature." 

This could be in the woods, a park, on a beach, or anywhere else where a poodle can explore and be in nature. Unlike a regular walk where a person and poodle simply go around the neighborhood, a decompression walk allows the poodle to engage in natural behaviors such as sniffing, digging, and running within a natural setting. It provides mental stimulation, which is important for the poodle's brain health and behavior. When a poodle is allowed to explore and engage with nature on their own terms, they use their brain to process and make sense of new information. This kind of mental activity can tire them out just as much as a physical workout.

At first glance, a decompression walk may look like nothing more than an opportunity to take a break from the routine of neighborhood walks. But, in reality, the benefits of a decompression walk go beyond that. As Sarah Stremming explains, "The cumulative effect of regular decompression walks is a sharper, more confident, more resilient dog."

The benefits of a decompression walk will even go beyond mental stimulation.

As the days and weeks pass of consistent decompression walks, a more confident and relaxed poodle can emerge. They'll also start to become more resilient in other areas of their life, including interactions with other dogs and people in your neighborhood. I believe it is the opportunity for a poodle to get to be a poodle, fully consumed in her own dogness. And when this opportunity is provided, a poodle will always rise to the occasion.

A weekly decompression walk is an essential activity that we as poodle owners should never substitute. This type of walking and exploring provides mental stimulation, encourages natural instincts, and promotes overall well-being for your poodle. 

The next time you decide to walk your poodle, take them on a decompression walk somewhere in nature and watch them thrive!

Take a minute, and get yourself comfortable while I tell you what makes the standard poodle the ideal hiking partner you never even knew you needed!

I thought the poodle was just a circus dog. Boy was I wrong!

The first time I considered a standard poodle as a hiking partner was more than a decade ago when the idea was introduced to me by a kind stranger at a ski lodge. We had just completed a day of skiing and were relaxing by the fire in the chalet, hands filled with hot chocolate. My husband and I were talking about the ideal hiking dog. We had Great Danes at the time, and I was looking for a breed that could do more in the backcountry with me. A man overheard our conversation and joined us by the fire. 

He asked; “Have you ever considered a standard poodle?”

My first thought was likely the same as you; a poodle? Aren’t those circus dogs?

But the stranger assured me I would be pleasantly surprised if I did some research on the breed.
I took him up on his challenge and began that very night to research poodles. Specifically the standard variety.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Intelligent and Trainable

One of the reasons poodles make excellent adventure dogs is their intelligence. Poodles are highly trainable and can quickly learn new skills and commands. This makes them perfect for outdoor activities that require obedience and discipline, such as hiking or camping.

Poodles are also very observant and have a keen sense of awareness of their surroundings. This can be extremely helpful when hiking on unfamiliar trails or camping in new areas. They are also great at problem-solving, which can come in handy when faced with unexpected challenges on the trail or in the wilderness.

Energetic and Active

Poodles are also energetic and active dogs. They love to run, play, and explore, making them perfect companions for outdoor adventures. They have a lot of stamina and can keep up with even the most active hikers or bikers. Properly conditioned standard poodles won't tire out quickly and can keep up with you on longer hikes or bike rides.

Their energy levels also make them great at playing fetch or other games, which can help keep them entertained and engaged during downtime on your outdoor adventures. 

Low-Shedding 

Another great thing about poodles is that they are low-shedding and hypoallergenic. This means that they don't shed much hair, making them a great choice for people with allergies. This can be especially important when camping or hiking in areas with a lot of dust or allergens.

Their low-shedding coat also means they are easier to maintain and keep clean when you're in the wilderness. Another interesting fact about the poodle coat is that it is water-resistant. Poodles are one of the original water-retrieving dog breeds. Their coats are designed to repel water from the skin. This helps the poodle hair to dry faster and keeps the poodle warm while outdoors on adventures.

A properly textured poodle coat is one of the more important details I breed for here at Galavanting Poodles. Those good coats matter!

What makes your breeding program different?” 

I understand the importance of maintaining healthy lineages; that is why I exhaustively research the pedigrees that go into my breeding program. My specific breeding process is research-based, taking into account the science behind maintaining a strong genetic pool. I enjoy reaching into the past to see which poodles have contributed to my gene pool. Sometimes I find a family of poodles that have offered a great deal to the health or temperament of my current line. And sometimes I will find a few “odd poodles out” that have not brought as many positive attributes to the overall poodle population. I weigh the good, the bad, and the mediocre when choosing pedigrees to move forward in my breeding program. 

No single poodle or family of poodles is perfect. And this is why I take my job very seriously when I move forward with poodles in my program.  I am dedicated to upholding strict standards of responsibility with all of my breedings. My goal is to improve on my lines with every new breeding I do.

The breeding timeline at Galavanting Poodles is short and sweet.

In the past, the prevailing theory for breeding dogs was to wait until the females were older, and only breed the females once every year or every other year until the female reached 8 or so years of age. However, like many things in dog husbandry, once the science was applied to breeding through careful research, we learned that we could do better for our breeding females.

Here is something to consider; the time it takes for a female dog to heal from her pregnancy, and wean her litter before her next heat cycle, is equivalent to a human experiencing a pregnancy every two years. In other words, the reproductive cycle of a dog is designed for regular pregnancies without breaks. Skipping a heat cycle between breedings can cause more problems than not.

Another thing I consider when making the choice to breed my female dogs back-to-back is the effects of progesterone on their uterine horns. Unlike humans, female dogs do not shed their uterine lining during or after each heat cycle. In fact, the only time a female dog can shed her uterine lining is when she is giving birth to a litter. Each time she has a heat cycle without a pregnancy the lining stacks up and increases her chances of developing an infection or endometriosis. 

The stacking of the linings can also be attributed to a loss of elasticity, which can negatively affect fertility. I’ve dealt with my own real-life experience of fertility issues when trying to breed older female dogs for the first time. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to use valuable breeding prospects because I waited too long to breed, or bred too infrequently. 

My philosophy now is to begin breeding once a female poodle reaches her 2nd birthday. After careful health testing, I ensure my female poodles are ready to enter their breeding careers. I only breed my females who have proven themselves as valuable assets to the poodle breed with their health, temperament, and structure. I know that both health and temperament are very important in any dog. I also know that a poodle needs to possess poodle qualities to maintain their long and rich history as poodles. My goal is to make poodles that act like poodles and look like poodles!  

I keep the breeding process as short and safe as possible by breeding a female back-to-back (that is to say; breeding on each heat cycle) from the age of 2 until my female reaches about 4 years old. This timeline allows me to produce 3-5 litters of strong, healthy puppies from an equally strong and healthy mother. 

The care and keeping of my breeding females.

My breeding poodles are 100% a part of my family and I provide them with the highest possible quality of care. My girls (and boys for that matter!) sleep in our beds, and lounge on our sofas. They hike the mountains with us, they camp with us, and they play with our friends who come to visit. My breeding poodles are as much an Alaska adventure poodle as any of my Galavanting Poodles. Their routines change very little during their breeding careers. When my girls are bred, they continue on a high-quality diet with extra food when necessary. The girls whelp their litters with me right by their side. I sleep in the same room with my mama poodles and their litters. I continue to live in that room as long as the puppies are nursing. Once the puppies are ready to graduate to regular food, I let my mama poodle decide how much she wants to be with her babies. The majority of my girls prefer to stay close to their litter even after the puppies are weaned. For her health and well-being, I stick right with her as a partner in the puppy-rearing process. 

I am constantly ensuring there is nothing that could put any sort of strain or stress on my girls while they are in whelp. I believe that part of breeding happy, loving pups begins with happy, loving mama poodles.

When my females retire from breeding.

I have learned that, for my own breeding program, it is best to retire my females from breeding at a relatively young age. I prefer to end their breeding careers by 4 or 4.5 years of age. This leaves my females with plenty of life to go on and enjoy the full experience of being a carefree dog. Once my females are finished breeding, there are more options for them. Some may return to the show ring to finish off a stellar career before being spayed. Some may retire, get spayed, and stick around Galavanting Poodles as an Auntie Mama to future litters. And still, some may get the opportunity to live with an extended family member or dear friend.

I do not sell my retired breeding poodles. They continue to live long, healthy, and enriching lives in my care or the care of someone close to me.

And there you have it. My own philosophy for breeding poodles and why I do things a bit differently than what you may find elsewhere. My program works well for me and my puppy families. I am forever grateful for the amazing breeding poodles in my program. It is my duty to them to make sure their lives are as enriched and full as they can possibly be.

There's nothing quite like a poodle puppy. They're so full of energy and life, always ready to play and have a good time. Poodles are one of the most popular dog breeds for a reason—they really are the total package. I'm fond of saying; "a poodle will adventure in the mountains with you one day, and chill on the sofa to binge Netflix the next." However, their true love for spending time outdoors with their people is truly an extra special trait in poodles.

Poodle puppies especially enjoy playing in the snow. Alaska winters can be long and dark, but having a puppy around breaks up the monotony and provides some comic relief! Poodle puppies love to bounce and play in the deep snow. The biggest challenge is getting them to come inside!

Poodles and Snow: A Match Made in Heaven?

Poodles are a versatile breed of dog; they come in three varieties or sizes, standard, miniature, and toy. And they can come in a multitude of colors! But one thing all poodles have in common is their love of the great outdoors—and that includes playing in the snow!

Poodle puppies are especially known for their boundless energy and exuberance. They love to play and have a good time, no matter what the weather is like outside. So it's no surprise that poodle puppies love to romp and play in the snow! It's just one of the many things that make poodles such special dogs.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you're planning on letting your pup play in the snow:

Dogs can get frostbite just like humans can so be sure to monitor your pup closely for signs of coldness such as shivering or whining. If their ears or tails seem especially cold, bring them inside and warm them up gradually.

Make sure your pup stays hydrated by providing them with fresh water - just like people, dogs can get dehydrated quickly when they're out in the cold.

Most importantly, have fun!

So you've decided to add a poodle puppy to your family! Congratulations! Whether this is your first puppy or you're a seasoned dog owner, there are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for your newest family member. Here we'll discuss what to expect in the first few weeks after bringing your poodle puppy home, from acclimating to their new environment to their first vet visit. We'll also touch on the importance of socialization and early exposure to grooming.

Leaving the Breeder's Home

For Galavanting Poodles, poodle puppies, they will go to their new homes around 10 weeks of age. This can be an emotional time for both the puppies and us here at Galavanting, who have spent countless hours caring for them since they were born. It's important to remember that your puppy is leaving everything they know - their littermates, the breeder's home, their daily routine - so there will be an adjustment period as they settle into their new life with you. Be patient and understanding during this time, and give your puppy the space they need to feel comfortable in their new home.

The First Few Weeks

During the first few weeks, it's important to create a routine for your puppy so they know what to expect each day. This will help them feel secure and settled in their new surroundings. Try to keep feeding times, walks, and playtimes consistent from day to day. It's also important to give your puppy plenty of opportunities to explore their new home and yard at their own pace. Don't force them into situations that make them feel uncomfortable - instead, allow them the freedom to approach new things on their own terms.

Your First Vet Visit

Within the first few days of having your poodle puppy at home, you should schedule an appointment with a veterinarian that you feel comfortable with. This will give you a chance to ask any questions about care and nutrition, and it will also give the vet a chance to assess your puppy's health and development. Be sure to bring along any paperwork that you received from the breeder, including vaccination records and pedigree information.

Introducing Your Poodle Puppy To Grooming

Poodles are known for their lovely hair that doesn't stop growing - and that means they require regular grooming like many dog breeds! In fact, because of their unique coat type, poodles actually require more grooming than most other breeds. It's important to start acclimating your puppy to grooming early on so that it isn't a stressful experience for either of you later down the road. If possible, schedule a visit with a groomer within the first few weeks after bringing your puppy home. This will give them a chance to get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of the grooming salon while also getting some much-needed one-on-one attention from someone other than you or your family members.

Bringing home a new poodle puppy is an exciting time for any dog owner! By keeping these tips in mind, you can help make sure that both you and your puppy have a smooth transition into this next chapter of your lives together. Remember - be patient, be consistent, and above all else, have fun!

Every poodle puppy litter raised here at Galavanting Poodles gets to go on several field trips as they learn about the world. But there is one field trip that takes the cake for these puppies! It’s the one that includes a visit to an airstrip, an airplane hangar, and many of the good and wonderful things that come along with living a pilot’s life.

Today we took a field trip to my childhood home to visit my father’s plane. His plane is affectionately called Red Bird by local pilots. It’s a pretty cool plane and I’ve spent many hours inside, as have my poodles.
My dad also treated the pups to a moose antler from a recent family harvest. He’s been on me to start training my poodles to track antler sheds. I think it’s high time these adventure poodles learn to track antlers, wouldn’t that be fun?

NBDD was created to bring awareness to black dogs in shelters. Black dogs are statistically the least likely color dog to be adopted. Ironically, black poodles are my most requested poodle color.

Back to the puppies!

Today we had a huge break in the rain! The sun was out all afternoon and the puppies had some serious playtime outside! We let both Sojo and Grace out to play with the puppies. Both parents loved their playtime! And the puppies enjoyed the organized chaos.

We also did our first barrier challenge today. The puppies had to cross over a short barrier to exit their weaning pen and access their food. The mass exodus was a comedy of errors, but they all made it out and were super happy to reach their food bowl. A few of them even wandered back into the weaning pen, of their own volition, for some play time.

We had our first tug game today between two puppies. It was adorable!

Purple is still recovering well. He does a couple nebulizer treatments a day and he’s on his antibiotics for another 11 days. That boy is a super hero! I’m so proud of him!

We also had our first puppy family come and visit today! Carrie Pocock and Steve visited from Fairbanks. It was definitely love at first sight for all involved!

The puppies loved having new visitors and quickly wrapped Steve and Carrie around their little paws. When Sojo and Grace came out to say hi, Grace immediately took to Steve! She even smiled at him!

With Steve & Carrie being officially Grace-approved, they will be “allowed” to take home one of her puppies in 4-5 weeks.

Tomorrow we’re in for another big day with more visitors! And I’m hoping the weather breaks from the rain so we can have another epic outdoor adventure!

Our boy, purple collar, AKA Mighty Mouse, took a sharp downward turn after eating his breakfast this morning. At about 5:30am, MM was living his best life. By 7am, he was lethargic and spitting up his breakfast.

I immediately took action and reached out to my vet (I have their private cell numbers) and told them I was bringing in a puppy that has possibly aspirated. Then I grabbed Mighty Mouse, jumped in the van and off we went.

Aspiration is fairly common in small puppies. They can inhale liquid from nursing or weaning. They can aspirate on wormer meds or water. In MM’s case, we believe that he spit up a bit after he was wormed on Saturday and possibly aspirated a bit of his spit up. He wasn’t feeling 100% on Sunday, but he was active, eating, eliminating, and playing like a pro.

It wasn’t until Monday morning that the signs of aspiration presented themselves. Thankfully, MM didn’t have a fever, which was a huge advantage for us!

As soon as I got to our vet, which is about 90 minutes south in Birchwood, MM was brought right in. His O2 level was good. He was spitting up a lot though, and it had started coming out his nose… another sure sign of aspiration. He was immediately x-rayed and we could see some congestion in one lung. His nose was progressively getting more stuffed so MM was breathing through his mouth.

But he didn’t have a fever, and his O2 level was good.

A round of antibiotics, anti-nausea meds and some Pepcid settled him down. And then he went into the incubator with an O2 boost. We began to see improvements almost immediately. When he was feeling a little better, he had an ultrasound done on his belly and internal organs. Everything looked wonderful! He still had a full stomach of food from breakfast and he was digesting it. All good signs that, even though he had aspirated, he still had enough oxygen in his blood to allow his body to keep running at high efficiency.

My vet asked if I had an incubator and oxygen concentrator, or if I knew how to get one.

I immediately knew who to call.

My dear friend, who lives in Fairbanks, is about 4 hours north of where I live. She is the one person I knew would surely have the needed equipment. Anita has been breeding French Bulldogs for many years. She’s a responsible breeder who knows the ins and outs of breeding healthy, strong French Bulldogs. And part of the process requires incubators and O2 concentrators for newborn Frenchies.

I call Anita and tell her; “if I can borrow your equipment, I’ll start my drive to Fairbanks now!”

Anita responds, “I’ll load it up and start driving to you. Wherever we cross paths, that’s where we’ll meet and I’ll give you the equipment.”

I truly have no words for such a selfless act from my friend. She ended up driving 2+ hours south to meet me and let me borrow her equipment to save my puppy.

And then she drove 2+ hours back home.

I called my husband and filled him in, I hit the road from Birchwood to Denali Park Village, where I met Anita. While I was driving, I texted another friend, who lives near me in Talkeetna. In a series of choppy and short text messages, Charity got the point that I needed a puppy sitter to watch the 5 babies at home while I drove north and my husband drove south to pick up purple collar puppy from the vet.

You see, while I went to pick up the equipment, my husband would finish work and then drive to Birchwood to pick up MM and bring him home. Our goal was to meet at home at about the same time.

Charity was immediately on board. She didn’t even question a thing. She said “I’ll be there right at 4pm”

And so, the travel plans were laid out and we all were on our ways.

Meanwhile, MM was at the vet, fighting the good fight. His tummy settled and he stopped spitting up. His nose went from stuffy to runny. He gained his energy and broke out of his incubator to roam the clinic back room He pee’d on his wee wee pads at the vet and settled back into his incubator with his O2 supplement. Throughout the day, MM improved. By the time my husband arrived to pick him up, he was a new puppy!

During my drive, I spoke to two more friends who have a wealth of knowledge in whelping and raising puppies. Both of whom eased my mind and helped me see that I’d made good choices and we were doing everything in our power to help purple collar.

My great friend, Kathy, went over several things for me to do and watch for once MM came home. She told me stories about how puppies aspirate and how common it can be. She assured me that the lack of fever was a huge advantage and that all signs looked good for MM

I drove through wind and rain. As I crossed over the mountain range, the rain beat down and the temperature hovered just below 38°F. I worried about snow in the range.

Please no snow. Please no slush.

Luckily, the worst weather was rain and a bit of fog.

I got home around 6:30. My husband brought Might Mouse home at about 7:15. That boy was feisty as soon as he saw me! He was active and excited! Aside from a runny nose, you’d never know MM has a rough morning.

He ate his dinner and then had a nebulizer treatment with sterile water while resting in my lap. He loved it

Soon after, I placed him in Anita’s incubator and we turned on her O2 concentrator. MM isn’t sounding congested, but I’m not taking any chances. He has his antibiotics to prevent pneumonia.

It seems, all signs point to a full recovery!

I’m relieved. I’m grateful. I’m tired! And I’m in for another long night (because there’s no way I’m sleeping when a puppy is not 100%!).

But thanks to immediate action, experienced vets, AMAZING FRIENDS, and a strong, healthy puppy… all signs point to smooth sailing ahead.

Whew! And that’s the update for today!

Six healthy poodle puppies were born just a few days ago and have brought us joy and sleepless nights. But we feel these little poodle puppies are worth every waking moment!

Three girls and three boys make up this sweet little bunch and they are already so feisty and full of energy. Grace is doing her job as The Best Mama Dog Ever and is taking great care of them.

The puppies have been proving themselves as champion snugglers. They love to be held whenever they're awake and have finished nursing.

The Road To The AKC Championship

Sojourner is my first Bred-By-Exhibitor AKC champion. I did not expect him to finish his championship as quickly as he did. In fact, I thought it would take us at least a year to earn his championship. But Sojourner walked into that ring with other ideas in his head!

Instead of 12 months, Sojo did it in two weekends with two 5-point majors, a 4-point major, and the final point on the last day. He also took a group 1 and group 2 from the Bred-By-Exhibitor class as well as a Bred-By-Exhibitor group 1.

I am so proud of him and everything he has accomplished. He is a lovely standard poodle and I am excited to watch him grow and continue to shine in the show ring.

CH Galavanting The Road Less Traveled

I don’t think I can come up with the right words to describe what a special weekend Sojourner and I had in Fairbanks, Alaska at his first dog show. Sojourner is 13 months old, and that is already a challenging age to introduce something as complicated as appropriate training and behavior for an AKC dog show. Sojourner and I did a lot of training to prepare him for the experience of his first dog show. But at the end of the day, there is just nothing quite like getting into the dog show ring and experiencing it all firsthand.

There are hundreds of other dogs that attend the Tanana Valley Kennel Club dog show weekend and thousands of new people. The noises and echoes inside the pole barn building on the fairgrounds can be intimidating for even the most seasoned of show dogs. And then there is the heat! During our Memorial Day dog show weekend, the temperature in Fairbanks hovered around 80ºF all weekend. Inside the building where the dogs competed, it was even hotter.

The Tanana Valley Kennel Club held four shows during the weekend. It took the first two shows for Sojourner to find his sea legs, as one judge put it.

By the third show, Sojourner had things figured out. He won Winners Dog, Best of Winners, Best Owner Handled, and the big one, Best of Variety over five champion-titled poodles. These wins in the standard poodle variety ring earned Sojourner a huge 5-point-major toward his championship! All of these wins came from the Bred By Exhibitor class. I was elated with his performance!

But Sojourner wasn’t finished after the variety ring. He went on to compete in the Non-Sporting group with a beautiful lineup of seasoned purebred dogs. Sojourner earned a group 2 placement behind the lovely dalmatian who had earned a Reserve Best in Show.

The next day Sojourner repeated his previous day’s performance in the Variety ring, and then went on to win the group 1 placement over the other purebred dogs in the Non-Sporting group ring!!

I am so, so proud of this sweet boy. Sojourner has earned both his necessary major points toward his AKC champion title. His majors are the largest majors awarded, 5 points each.

The next step for Sojourner and me is to continue the summer AKC dog shows in Alaska, as we work toward finishing his AKC championship.

This weekend in Fairbanks was a great way to start his dog show career!

All the white poodles did so well in class. They were attentive to their people and eager to please. I should be humble, but I just can’t…! I am SO proud of this litter and its people!
